We are going through the hassle of maintaining both, Instagram and Facebook (additionally to this website) and often we get asked: is Facebook still worth the effort? Find out about that in this post as well as some tips how to expand your reach on Facebook.

Different pages – Different strategies
First of all, it must be noted that both pages are completely different. While Instagram is a platform entirely build up for photography (or at least photos), Facebook is simply broader. Therefore, it is harder to reach people in your specific niche (landscape photography in our case). Facebook is not just about images, but also about videos, links, news and much more. But this also means your content can be chosen much broader if wanted. It’s totally fine to share a funny meme or video every once in a while! Stories however are not very popular on Facebook yet.
As a conclusion, you should use different strategies on both platforms to expand your reach.
How to gain new Follower
We were struggling a lot to find out a strategy to reach new possible follower and build up a community on Facebook. There is no explorer page, stories are not popular and hashtags aren’t really working either. So how will people see your image? Well, if you don’t want to promote your images (which you shouldn’t, especially not in the beginning) you have only one chance: get your image out there! We do that by sharing it in different (landscape) photography groups we searched carefully over a long period. These can be quite broad for landscapes or smaller, such as groups for a specific region in your home country or a group just for waterfall photography. Just be creative about finding these groups and share your content on a regular basis.
We would advise to post around the same time as your Instagram to reach the maximum of your follower. But share your images on different times to the (more international) groups. For us it worked best to post around 6pm and share it directly to the German/European groups. Then we share the image to the more international groups at noon the next day. The best thing is, that you can schedule your post for later, a feature still missing on Instagram.
The best groups are the ones that let you share the image directly from your page. This will allow you to invite people to like/follow your page once they liked the image.
Make some advertisement on your Instagram for your Facebook page (and the other way around) every once in a while.
But is it all worth the hassle?
We would say: yes, for sure! Although Facebook is not on its peak of existence it offers an opportunity to reach an entirely different audience. The trend is that people on Facebook are generally older and on Instagram younger, so you have two different communities.
Additionally, you have some more possibilities on Facebook such as the sharing of videos or the linking to your website. You can share different content, for example more often images in landscape format (horizontal).
Eventually, you also have to think about the future. Maybe Facebook is just one update away from being more popular again and then you are among the ones having already a build-up page with a (small) community.
Once you’ve been through the hassle of finding good groups its really easy-going and you can reach quite a lot of people with a good image. Once we made nearly 300 new page likes with one single image (which is way more than you would get with a promotion)! The great advantage of Facebook is that you don’t really have any Follower-Unfollower. Since we opened the page up in February 2018, we only had a couple of “unlikes”.
You should see Facebook not as something better or worse than Instagram, more than an entirely different platform with the possibility of reaching a different audience. But it also means extra work!
Tip: Share pictures that did great on Instagram, as they usually do great on Facebook too. But avoid sharing the complete same content on both pages for the sake of the people following you on both platforms.
Do you own a Facebook page or will you open up one? Tell us about it in the comments, we are happy to swing by your page!
